The article examines the efficiency and productivity of Swiss insurance companies in different sectors from 1997–2013. They found that productivity has improved in property/casualty and reinsurance sectors, but not in life insurance. Internationalization of insurance business positively impacts efficiency. Being a small specialist or a large diversified company is optimal for efficiency. These findings are important for Swiss insurance companies, regulators, policymakers, academics, and practitioners in other countries.
