Coalition governments linked to larger deficits in industrial democracies.
Budget deficits in many countries are influenced by both economic and political factors. The idea that tax rates are adjusted to minimize the negative effects of taxation doesn't fully explain the high deficits seen in recent years. In countries with short government terms and multiple parties in power, deficits tend to be larger. The slow reduction of deficits after 1973 can be attributed to challenges in managing coalition governments.
