Many people don't like being taken advantage of in group situations. People who cooperate are willing to punish those who don't, even if it costs them and they don't get anything in return. A study showed that cooperators do punish free-riders, especially when they don't cooperate much. Free-riders can avoid punishment by cooperating more. This suggests that when punishment is possible, there is less free riding.
