New Study Reveals Planting Trees Can Reduce Soil Erosion by 74%
Land degradation in the Gumera watershed is causing soil erosion, leading to loss of soil fertility and productivity. To tackle this issue, researchers used a model called SWAT to predict sediment yield and runoff, identify erosion-prone areas, and test erosion control strategies. The model accurately matched measured flow and sediment data, showing that 72% of the watershed is at risk of erosion. By implementing vegetation filter strips, sediment yield can be reduced by 58 to 74%, helping to protect the watershed and improve water quality.
