The article examines changes in productivity in different provinces of China from 1978 to 2008. By using a Hicks-Moorsteen index, the researchers were able to break down total factor productivity into technical and efficiency changes. They found that, on average, there was moderate productivity growth across provinces during this time period. However, there were significant variations in the rate of productivity growth and its components from province to province. The study also utilized new estimates of capital stock to better understand these changes.
