Competition in Infrastructure Procurement Could Save Developing Countries Billions.
Infrastructure development is crucial for economic growth, but it's important to use financial resources efficiently. By analyzing data from infrastructure projects, it was found that more competition leads to lower costs. For roads and water projects, at least seven bidders are needed, while three may be enough for power projects. The way auctions are designed also plays a big role in reducing costs. By promoting competition, developing countries could save up to 8.2% of total infrastructure development costs, which are estimated to be around 360 billion U.S. dollars annually.
