The study looked at the costs of mutual funds and real estate funds in Portugal from 2007 to 2012. They found that mutual funds with shares, derivatives, and many assets tend to have higher expenses. Real estate funds, on the other hand, have lower costs if they are closed-end funds. Interestingly, there was no clear link between expenses and the size or performance of the funds.
