The study looked at how income inequality in China has changed from 1985 to 2001. They used a new method to estimate income distributions and found that inequality has increased a lot in both rural and urban areas. The gap between rural and urban incomes has also grown, contributing to overall inequality. In the United States, inequality has mainly grown within rural and urban areas. Consumption inequality in urban areas has also risen.
