Seasonal adjustment impacts Canadian consumption function, challenging income hypothesis.
The researchers tested the permanent income hypothesis using Canadian data from 1947 to 1991. They found that while seasonally adjusted data supported the hypothesis, seasonally unadjusted data did not. The presence of unit roots at zero frequency was consistent in both types of data, but seasonal unit roots were evident in the unadjusted data.
