Developing countries have been accumulating a lot of foreign reserves since the 1990s, which amounts to almost 30% of their GDP and 8 months of imports. This costs them about 1% of their GDP in lost income. While this helps protect them from financial crises, they could potentially reduce this cost by lowering their short-term foreign debts.
