Trade restrictions on fertiliser imports in the UK may be necessary due to imperfect competition. Optimal tariffs and subsidies can improve welfare and distribution in the industry. Using a simulation model, it was found that a subsidy on domestic production is the best policy to counter competitive distortions. When facing foreign dumping, protection of the industry should be reduced rather than increased.
