Uniform Tariffs Could Curb Excessive Protectionism and Benefit Consumers
Uniform tariffs are popular but not strongly justified economically. Governments may prefer them to reduce excessive protection due to free-rider, input-price, and precommitment effects. However, none of these reasons definitively support uniform tariffs. Decisions should be made case by case.
