The article argues for a broader definition of food safety, called "Food System Safety," which includes risks beyond just foodborne illness. This new approach considers whole-diet cumulative risks, as well as risks throughout the food production and disposal process. The current focus on narrow food safety can lead to inefficient resource allocation and negative impacts on nutrition, environment, and workplace safety. A comprehensive understanding of food safety can help improve resource allocation and outcomes for health and safety in the food system.
