The EU's eastern enlargement in 2004 and 2007 brought together Western and Eastern Europe. Many were worried about problems arising from this, but recent studies show that the EU institutions have adapted well to the enlargement. The new member states have also stayed committed to democracy, the rule of law, and free markets, without any signs of going backwards.
