Currency crises triggered by thresholds, not sunspots, reveals Brazilian Real vulnerability.
Currency crises are more likely triggered by hitting a certain threshold of currency overvaluation rather than random factors like sunspots. This study looked at the probability and expected size of a devaluation of the Brazilian Real before the end of a fixed exchange rate system. The results suggest that currency crises are more likely caused by hitting specific thresholds rather than random events.
