The article examines how real and nominal shocks affect exchange rates and prices in Australia and New Zealand compared to the United States. Real shocks, which improve terms of trade, have a bigger impact on exchange rates than nominal shocks. In Australia, real shocks don't affect domestic prices much, but in New Zealand, they lead to a significant permanent increase in prices.
