The study looked at how extending unemployment benefits for older workers in certain areas of Austria affected the rate of people entering unemployment. The researchers found that after the new law was implemented in June 1988, the number of people becoming unemployed increased by four to eleven percentage points. This happened because companies could now let go of older workers more easily, as the better benefits made it less damaging for their reputation.
