Panel methods for testing PPP may lead to serious economic miscalculations.
Purchasing power parity (PPP) is often found to be valid when tested using panel data, but not in individual country analysis. Panel methods for testing unit roots in macroeconomic time series assume no long-run relationships between countries, which is often not true. This leads to a high rate of rejecting the null hypothesis of a unit root, even when it is correct.
