New regional monetary integration schemes boost stability in developing economies.
The article argues that the traditional theory of Optimum Currency Area is not enough to understand new monetary integration among developing countries. Instead, a new framework is needed to study South-South monetary cooperation. Examples from Southern Africa, East Asia, and Latin America show that this kind of cooperation can improve economic stability. The paper suggests some conditions that need to be met for these benefits to happen.
