OPEC's "Fair Price" Statements Have Little Impact on Crude Oil Market
OPEC and its member countries often talk about what they think is a fair price for crude oil. Some of these statements agree with the actual market price, but many disagree with future prices. The question is whether these "fair price" statements tell us anything new about oil prices. By looking at statements made from 2000 to 2010, we found that these pronouncements don't really affect the market price of oil. In other words, they don't give any new information to people trading oil futures.
