Government spending in Indonesia drives up real exchange rate, defying economic theory.
The study looked at Indonesia's real exchange rate and found that only government consumption and the fiscal deficit have a significant impact on it. When government spending and the fiscal deficit increase, the real exchange rate also goes up. This means that the idea of Ricardian equivalence, which suggests that government spending doesn't affect the economy, was proven wrong in this case.
