The article discusses how European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and the optimum currency area (OCA) theory are connected. New economic theories have made it clearer that joining a monetary union like EMU can have more benefits than costs. Even though there isn't a simple test for OCA, the idea of EMU was pushed forward without much guidance from OCA theory.
