Immigrants' Success in US Linked to Country of Origin's Education Level
Immigrants from different countries in the US have varying levels of success in terms of earnings and education. Surprisingly, immigrants from Algeria have higher education levels than those from Israel or Japan, even though fewer migrants come from Algeria. The more immigrants there are from a country, the lower their average educational attainment tends to be. This pattern is also influenced by the population and education level of the source country. A model using these factors can predict 73% of the variation in educational attainment among immigrant groups in the US. Data from Sweden and Canada support these findings.
