African Farmers Freed from Decades of Unfair Trade Policies
The study examined agricultural policies in Sub-Saharan Africa from 1961 to 2004 and how they affected farmers and consumers. Researchers quantified how trade policies impacted prices and welfare for 19 African countries. They found that policies restricting trade were more harmful in Africa compared to other regions like Asia or Latin America. The data showed improvements in policy reforms over the past 20 years, especially in reducing taxes on exports. However, these national policies still had a significant negative impact on trade and economic well-being in Sub-Saharan Africa.
