Livestock Boom Could Lift Millions Out of Poverty in Zimbabwe
Livestock is crucial for small-scale farmers in Zimbabwe, but limited market access hinders their ability to invest in better livestock management. This leads to low production and income. By improving market access, farmers can adopt better technologies, increase income, and reduce poverty. Goats provide cash for daily needs, while cattle are important for draft power and milk. Challenges include high mortality rates due to feed shortages. Developing better markets and technology can help farmers increase production and income. The potential of market-led technology development in crop-livestock systems has not been fully utilized. To address this, an innovative approach is needed to evaluate local constraints, test new livestock markets and management strategies, and strengthen collaboration between private and public sectors.
