The boreal forests in northern Europe have a diverse ecosystem that is important for biodiversity conservation. Previous models of forest dynamics have underestimated the complexity of these ecosystems. A new model has been developed that takes into account the natural variability of forest structures and dynamics, including the presence of old forests. This revised model suggests that managing forests to maintain old forest characteristics is crucial for conservation in this region.
