Central banks use asset purchases to combat zero interest rates
Central banks have been lowering interest rates to near zero since the 2008 crisis. When rates hit zero, a new steady state appears in the economy. To combat this, large scale asset purchases are used to stimulate the economy. A general equilibrium model was used to study these effects, and research shows that these purchases can help ease monetary policy during times of low interest rates.
