Hedge funds have grown faster than mutual funds in the past decade. Hedge funds are less regulated than mutual funds, but they both do the same job. This paper compares how hedge funds and mutual funds are organized, how they perform, and the risks they face. It suggests that the performance gap between hedge funds and mutual funds will get smaller, regulations will limit hedge funds' flexibility, and hedge funds will become more like traditional investment options.
