Free Trade Agreements Benefit Chile, Hurt Excluded Countries
In the article about Chile’s trade agreements, researchers analyzed the benefits of Chile's trade deals with different countries. They found that Chile gains the most from agreements with "Northern" countries because they give Chile better access to markets, offsetting trade diversion costs. Deals with specific countries helped Chile more than just free trade alone. The Free Trade Agreement of the Americas (FTAA) benefited most member countries, while the European Union lost out. Overall, global free trade was much more beneficial than the FTAA for the Americas. The study used a detailed economic model to show that through strategic trade deals, Chile can gain a lot and global free trade brings huge benefits compared to regional agreements.
