Exporting boosts firm size, but no immediate productivity gains found.
The study looked at how exporting affects the performance of firms in India. They compared firms that started exporting to similar firms that didn't. They found that firms that started exporting were already more productive before they began exporting. These firms also grew bigger after starting to export. However, there wasn't much evidence that their productivity improved right after they started exporting. Surprisingly, the productivity of firms that started exporting actually increased a couple of years before they began exporting.
