Biofuel mandate could drive up food prices for millions
The study looked at how different bioenergy crop yields and costs affect the mix of crops used to make cellulosic ethanol in the US. They focused on corn, soybeans, wheat, corn stover, wheat straw, switchgrass, and miscanthus. The results showed that most bioenergy crops are grown in the Southern Plains and Southeast, not the Midwest. Lower mandates for cellulosic ethanol can be met with agricultural residues, while higher mandates lead to price increases for corn, soybeans, and wheat.
