Agricultural trade liberalization may harm developing countries, eroding benefits and increasing obstacles.
Agricultural trade liberalization may not benefit all developing countries equally. Some countries could actually be worse off. Tariff issues are the focus of current trade talks, but other barriers like standards set by private companies are a bigger problem for many poor countries. The preferences they currently have in European and North American markets could be eroded by wider trade agreements. This could put them at a disadvantage compared to more advanced developing countries. While global trade liberalization is important, specific rules and actions are needed to help the poorest countries compete.
