Decentralization of power to local governments is a big trend worldwide, but its benefits are still debated. By studying how elections and political parties influence the delivery of public services, researchers found that when local governments are elected by the people and national party leaders have control over local politicians, public services like education and healthcare tend to be better. Their analysis of data from 135 countries over 30 years supports this idea.
