The study looked at how changes in trade policy affected productivity in Colombian manufacturing industries from 1977 to 1991. They found that when tariffs were reduced, plants became more productive, especially larger plants and those in less competitive industries. This increase in productivity was linked to importing more materials, using more skilled workers, investing in machinery, and shifting production to more efficient plants.
