Small and medium-sized businesses in the European Union often struggle to get bank loans. A study looked at data from 2005 and 2006 to see why. They found that the youngest and smallest businesses have the hardest time getting loans. Countries with a lot of foreign-owned banks tend to have better loan accessibility for businesses. Also, countries with concentrated banking sectors have more positive perceptions about loan accessibility.
