Algeria's Monetary Policy Faces Challenges as Demand for Cash Wavers
The researchers studied money demand in Algeria from 1979 to 2019. They found that the need for cash is influenced by informal economy practices. Inflation affects all types of money demand, with a stronger impact on cash. Despite some financial restrictions, interest rates and exchange rates also play a role in money demand. The demand for M1 and M2 remains stable, but the demand for cash is not stable. These findings have implications for designing effective monetary policies in Algeria.
