Hybrid maize varieties in Zimbabwe only marginally increase farmer incomes.
The study looked at how new types of maize affected farmers in Zimbabwe. The newer maize varieties didn't spread as quickly as older ones, partly because they were made for commercial farmers with different needs. Farmers who used the new maize made a bit more money, but not a lot. Using the new maize only increased crop incomes by about 10%. Farmers who made more money from maize also had more livestock. Overall, the new maize helped farmers earn a bit more, but not a huge amount.
