Albania's Abandoned Farmland Threatens Rural Productivity and Food Security
Albania's farmland distribution was changed to prevent economic crisis and social unrest. Some think the land is too small and needs to be combined for better productivity. Data from 2005 show that small plots don't actually reduce productivity. However, 10% of productive land is not being used, mostly for at least 5 years. Farmers blame small plots in very few cases. The real issue seems to be problems in the land market system, like legal gaps and inefficiencies, causing lots of land to be abandoned. To keep Albania's rural economy strong and be able to combine land effectively in the future, fixing these problems is crucial.
