Young technology-based firms grow faster when they work on cutting-edge technologies in rapidly developing fields. On the other hand, firms that collaborate with established companies on research do better in slower-paced technology environments. The study shows that the type of technology a firm focuses on and the speed of technological progress in its field play a crucial role in its growth. This research suggests a new way to measure the pace of technological development using patent citations.
