Large, specialized farms dominate U.S. agriculture profits, leaving many struggling.
Farm businesses in the U.S. were studied from 1987-91 to see how profitable they were based on region, type, and size. The research found that larger and more specialized farms play a big role in U.S. agriculture production. About a third of farms were not profitable, and income varied widely. The study compared farm incomes to returns on U.S. Treasury bills to see how well farms were doing financially.
