High transportation costs hinder profitability of inorganic fertilizer use in Nigeria.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, using more inorganic fertilizer for growing maize in Nigeria may not be as profitable as previously thought. The study looked at real data and found that current fertilizer use is not as low as believed. The low increase in crop yield from using more fertilizer and high transportation costs make it less profitable. To make fertilizer use more profitable, reducing transportation costs is more effective than giving subsidies. Other factors like timely access to fertilizer, good seeds, irrigation, credit, and good farming practices are also important for better crop productivity.
