Stock market investment is low early in life, while human capital investment is common. This study shows that when human capital investment is considered and adjusted to match earnings differences, a standard model of portfolio choice can explain stock market participation rates throughout life. Additionally, factoring in human capital changes the impact of borrowing costs on stock market participation.
