Networked markets competition leads to decreased welfare and limited trade options.
This paper looks at how competition works in markets where trading is done through a network. The researchers created a model to see how prices and flows of goods are decided. They found that prices go up along supply chains, not all connected players trade, and adding more trading relationships can lower welfare. They also discovered that economies with reselling can never be competitive, and large, well-connected economies are competitive.
