Regional economic integration through the ASEAN Free Trade Area has increased trade between ASEAN-5 countries and Japan. By using a specific index based on the AFTA scheme, researchers found that the Philippines and Malaysia benefited the most in trade with Japan. Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand also saw increased trade with Japan due to Japanese investments in their countries.
