Higher wages lead to increased productivity for unskilled workers, study finds.
Efficiency wages theory suggests that higher wages can improve worker productivity. A study using data from the 1990 British Workplace Industrial Relations Survey found that for unskilled manual workers, higher wages and supervision are substitutes in motivating effort. This supports the idea that wages and supervision can influence worker behavior. The study also found no evidence to rule out efficiency wages in favor of incentive contracts.
