Snowmelt runoff crucial for water supply, impacted by climate change.
Snow plays a crucial role in mountain catchments' streamflow seasonality. A study on 59 catchments in Czechia from 1980 to 2014 found that despite only 12-37% of precipitation falling as snow, 17-42% of total runoff comes from snowmelt. Snow is more effective in generating runoff than rain. In years with less snow, runoff and groundwater recharge decrease, affecting summer baseflow. Lower snow storage leads to earlier snowmelt, causing lower groundwater recharge and summer baseflow. Summer low flows are not just due to low precipitation and high evapotranspiration but are significantly influenced by winter snowpack.
