High International Reserves Shield Economies from Financial Crises, Study Finds
Emerging market economies hold high levels of international reserves and foreign debts because reserves act as collateral for borrowing. During the Global Financial Crisis, countries didn't use reserves much. A model shows that holding reserves before a financial shock and using them slightly during the shock is the best policy. Keeping reserves steady during a crisis also helps stabilize the economy.
