Revolutionizing Water Efficiency in California's Tree Nut Farms Through Remote Sensing
Water use efficiency in almond and pistachio orchards in California was studied using a combination of remote sensing and crop evapotranspiration models. The researchers found that almond trees had higher crop coefficients than pistachio trees, leading to a difference in transpiration of 97 mm over the season. Soil evaporation accounted for 16% and 13% of total water use for almonds and pistachios, respectively. The models were verified using field data, showing good agreement with actual measurements. This approach can help farmers make better irrigation decisions for their crops.
