European Central Bank maintains price stability, faces challenge of national responsibilities.
The European Central Bank (ECB) has been in charge of monetary policy in the euro area since 1999. Their main goal is to keep prices stable in the medium term. The ECB is independent and has been successful in this goal, keeping inflation expectations steady. The euro is now a widely used currency and a symbol of European unity. However, during the financial crises of 2007-2011, tensions arose between the ECB's single monetary policy and individual countries' economic policies. This remains a key challenge for the future.
