Early sowing and nitrogen boost quality and yield of fodder oats.
A study in Karnataka looked at how different planting times and nitrogen levels affect the growth and quality of fodder oats. Early planting in June led to the highest amount of dry matter and green fodder yield. Using 125 kg of nitrogen per hectare also resulted in higher dry matter and green fodder yield compared to 100 kg. The early planting and higher nitrogen level also increased the quality of the oats, with higher levels of crude protein, total ash, and ether extract. Overall, planting oats early in June and using 125 kg of nitrogen per hectare produced the best yield and quality of fodder oats in the study.
